Google Page Experience Guide

What Google means by page experience, the Core Web Vitals thresholds to aim for, and how to fix the usual problems.

The Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

How quickly the main content appears. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

How much the layout jumps while loading. Aim for 0.1 or less.

Beyond the vitals

  • Serve every page over HTTPS
  • Design for mobile first
  • Avoid intrusive pop-ups that block the main content
  • Make the main content easy to find and read

Common fixes

  • Compress and correctly size hero images; preload the largest one
  • Remove or defer unused JavaScript and third-party tags
  • Reserve space for images, ads and embeds to prevent layout shifts
  • Use a CDN and caching for faster server response times

How to measure

Use field data from the Chrome UX Report in Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report, and lab tools such as PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse to diagnose specific pages.
